Japan’s base oils output rose to a six-month high in September just weeks before the permanent closure of another of the country’s Group I base oils plants.Base oils output of 211,490 kilolitres (187,300t) in September rose from 187,270kl the previous month, government data showed.Output still fell by 7pc and for a sixth month from year-earlier levels. The drop in production cut total base oils output to 1.81mn kl in the first nine months of the year. The volume was down 5pc from 1.91mn kl during the same period last year. It was still the second-highest since 2018.Higher-than-usual base oils output this and last year coincided with the closure of a Group I base oils plant in second-half 2022 and preceded the closure of another plant in October this year. The higher output added to a larger-than-usual build-up of surplus supplies last and early this year. The trend could have reflected moves to build base oils stocks ahead of the closure of the two plants..Japan’s August base oils output falls
